A weekend of drama and an impressive drive from 16th in race one to 5th in race two has seen David Wall retain the CAMS Endurance Trophy this weekend.

The trophy is awarded to the driver who performs best in the two mini - endurance rounds here at Phillip Island and at Eastern Creek at the end of May where David picked up two race wins.

This weekend, the fourth round of the Championship, was not as easy for David in his Wilson Security backed Wall Racing Porsche Cup S as it was in Eastern Creek.

Despite concerns about the strong wind at the circuit, David was very pleased with how the car felt during qualifying.

"We didn't run green tyres at all on Friday or during Saturday's practice sessions so I was not sure how the car would react," said David after qualifying.

"I could not have been more pleased with how the car felt with the new tyres - it was perfect!

"I think we are in a good position going into tomorrow's races, but anything is possible during the two, hour long races."

What David was not excepting was a mechanical failure that would have a significant impact on his weekend.

Starting from pole position David's race started well, leading the first nine laps before disaster struck.

"At the start of the tenth lap the spindle on one of my rear tyres broke, making the car completely undriveable," said David after the first race.

"I managed to limp back to the pits and the team were able to repair the car.

"Unfortunately by the time I got back out on the track I was four laps down and at the rear of the field.

"To make it worse we had to pit outside the allotted pit window which meant I had to come back in for a 60 second pit stop.

"When I returned to the track I knew my only option was to focus and drive flat out for the rest of the race."

While David put in an outstanding drive he was not able to overcome the time he had lost in the pits. He was able to make up a few places and came home in 16th place.

The second of the two, hour long races on Sunday was always going to be a battle for David starting in 16th position but a rocket start saw him storm though the grid to be up into 9th place after just half a lap.

The safety car cut short his charge but once the safety car came in David was quick to make up more ground.

David quickly caught and passed more drivers and was in 5th place after the first full racing lap. Two laps later he passed Crick to be in 4th and right behind Grant's Mosler.

"I was not able to find a way past the Mosler, his pace on the straights meant he was able to pull away just enough that I was not able to get close enough to make a move," said David after the race.

"The team made the call to bring me in early and see if I could jump him by putting in excellent in and out laps."

Unfortunately it didn't quite work, but David held his 4th place until the safety car came out with just 5 minutes in the race.

David had managed to pull out a sizable gap to his championship challenger Hackett prior to the safety car coming out.

After the safety car came in there was just a few laps left and David held Hackett behind him for a couple of laps before he pushed his way through just before the chequered flag fell leaving David in 5th position.

"I have to say a special thank you to my team this weekend, particularly Steve Williams. They didn't let the disappointment of the failure get to them, they worked very quickly to repair the car and get me back out on track and into the fight as quickly as possible," said David after race two.

"They gave me a car this weekend that I think we could have won with if not for the problem in race one.

"We will bounce back at Bathurst."

There is now a significant gap before the next round of the championship at Bathurst in October.

Before then David will remain busy; next weekend he will join his father Des Wall and Trevor Symonds with Alan East Motorsport to chase victory in the Dial Before You Dig Australian Six Hour at Eastern Creek Raceway.

Then, just three weeks later David will make the long trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the 12-hour Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race in Sepang. There he will compete in a Mosler for the first time and joining him will be Andrew MacPherson and Mike Reedy.

David Wall is racing this year thanks to the continued support of Wilson Security, Payce, Shannons and Mount Aqua.
